Dear IAMP  members
Here are some updates that we have received from member academies.

The Academy of Sciences of South Africa ASSAf had an opportunity to profile itself at the 17th UN Climate change conference COP17 - (http://www.cop17-cmp7durban.com/ ) which took place in Durban from 28 November – 5 December 2011. The Academy was granted an observer status at the COP 17 and for future annual UNFCCC COP meetings. 200 copies of the InterAcademy Medical Panel’s statement on the health co-benefits of policies to tackle climate change were distributed.( http://tinyurl.com/iampHBCCM)

Non-Communicable Diseases The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (BAS) and the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine (ANM) are organizing an IAMP regional workshop on Non-Communicable Diseases, with a specific focus on cancer and cardiovascular diseases.  This workshop will take place in Rio de Janeiro on May 3-4, 2012.

The workshop is IAMP member academies’ response to the   Report of the  High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases held in September 2011, in New York. (http://www.un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A%2F66%2FL.1&Lang=E )

The 13 IAMP member academies in the Americas have each been  invited to send two representatives, an expert on prevention and control in cancer and the other on prevention and control in cardiovascular diseases.

WHS
The dates have been set for the 2012 World Health Summit.  A mission profile is available on the IAMP website (www.iamp-online.org) On the occasion of the last WHS, the IAMP launched the Young Physician Leaders programme with participants selected from nominations sent by member academes. Following this event a piece has now been published in the Lancet on IAMP efforts to confront the challenges faced by young leaders  in the health sector. The IAMP website is undergoing a restyling. The designer will be sending proposals to us as the work proceeds. We are seeking website users willing to brainstorm ideas on the final design. Please help us create a pool of ‘experts” to call upon. Send nominations to the Secretariat by 3 February.
