The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, founded in 1603 by Federico Cesi, is the world’s oldest scientific academy and included Galileo Galilei among its first members. Its institutional mission is “to promote, coordinate, integrate and disseminate scientific knowledge, at its highest expression, in the spirit of cultural unity and universality.” It is a non-governmental, independent body within the sphere of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage.

The Academy organizes national and international conferences, lectures, conventions and seminars; it promotes research projects and activities; awards prizes and scholarships; publishes reports of its activities as well as proceedings of conferences, conventions and seminars. Since 1992, it acts as scientific advisor to the President of the Italian Republic, who recently has granted the Academy the Permanent High Patronage status.
The Lincei Academy maintains several exchange agreements with foreign national academies and represents Italy in the main academic international organizations, such as IAP the global network of science academies, the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP), the All European Academies Network (ALLEA), the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC), Groupe Inter-académique pour le Développement (GID), Euro Mediterranean Academic Network (EMAN).

The seat of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei is in the historical Palazzo Corsini, located in the heart of Rome. The Corsini Palace also houses the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the Corsiniana Library, with its rich collection of antique and contemporary works, manuscripts, and periodicals.

In May 2014, the Lincei hosted the Joint meetings of the Executive Committees of IAMP and IAP global network of Science Academies and the Board of the  InterAcademy Council (IAC)
